- 1 By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $2.15 a day.
- 2 Reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions.
- 3 Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.
- 4 Ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources and access to basic services.
- 5 Build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure to climate-related extreme events.
Over 700 million people still live in extreme poverty today.
1 in 10 people worldwide earns less than $2.15 per day.
COVID-19 pushed an estimated 97 million more people into poverty.
Women and children are disproportionately affected by poverty worldwide.
The global extreme poverty rate fell from 36% in 1990 to 8.4% in 2019 — one of humanity's greatest achievements — but COVID-19 reversed years of gains and progress toward the 2030 target has effectively stalled.
What We've Accomplished
- Over 1.2 billion people lifted out of extreme poverty between 1990 and 2019.
- China alone lifted over 800 million people out of poverty since 1978, the largest reduction in history.
- Social protection systems now cover about 45% of the global population, up from under 20% in 2000.
- Rwanda cut its poverty rate from 78% in 2000 to 38% by 2017 through targeted rural development programs.
- Bangladesh reduced extreme poverty from 43% to under 5% between 2000 and 2022.
2030 Outlook
Off Track
COVID-19 pushed an estimated 97 million additional people into extreme poverty in 2020. By 2030, an estimated 575 million people will still live on less than $2.15 per day if current trends continue. Conflict-affected countries now account for over 80% of the extreme poor. Without a dramatic surge in investment and policy action, SDG 1 will not be achieved on time.
